long good-bye. A poignant name for Alzheimer’s disease, a common form of dementia characterized by memory lapses, loss of mobile ability, and an inability to remember anybody or anything. Patients cannot recognize themselves or people near and dear to them and often live a long time, “the long good- bye,” before they succumb to the disease. The term is a recent one that has been used by several public figures (including Nancy Reagan on 60 Minutes, 9/24/02) and apparently isn’t in- cluded in any dictionary.
