词汇 | lollapalooza |
词源 | lollapalooza. An extraordinary person or thing; an excep- tional example of something. The French expression allez-fusil, “Forward the musket!,” became common in Ireland after French troops landed at Killala in 1798. County Mayo residents pronounced it “ally foozee” and coined a new word from it meaning “sturdy fellow.” Mencken, among others, believes that our lollapalooza, which is also spelled lallapalooza, comes from this word. Surprisingly few words came to American En- glish from the eloquent Irish, the list almost limited to banshee, bog, lollapalooza, paddy wagon, shamrock, shanty, shebang, shenanigans, shillelagh, smithareens, whisky, and possibly speak- easy. Phrases, as these pages show, are another story. |
