Longshanks. Edward I, king of England from 1272 to 1307, was so tall that he was known as Edward Longshanks, as is not- ed in early chronicles. Edward was also called the Hammer of the Scots. His policy of no taxation without the consent of Par- liament is said to have become the basis of “no taxation without representation.” Edward’s last words were “carry my bones be- fore you on your march, for the rebels will not be able to endure the sight of me, alive or dead.” See going by shank’s mare. |
