词汇 | long time no see |
词源 | long time, no see. The expression may date back only to the early 1920s, when it was first recorded as American slang. Oth- er greetings common at the same time are How’s tricks?, and What do you say? But according to another theory, long time no see came into the language from pidgin english, brought home from the Far East by U.S. and British sailors in the early 1900s along with other expressions such as chop-chop for “hurry” and no can do. Long time no see is said to be a direct translation into pidgin of a Chinese expression meaning the same. See also chinese language contributions to english. |
