词汇 motive-hunting of a motiveless malignity
词源
motive-hunting of a motiveless malignity. Thus did Samuel Taylor Coleridge (1772–1834) describe the villain Iago’s solilo- quy in Shakespeare’s Othello (at the end of act one, scene three), which shows Iago trying to rationalize the hostility he feels. The full quote of the famous phrase is “Iago’s soliloquy, the motive-hunting of a motiveless malignity—how awful it is!” The observation is from Coleridge’s Lectures on Shakespeare and Milton (1811–12). In that same work he coined his homely definitions of prose and poetry: “Prose—words in their best or- der; poetry, the best words in their best order.”
