词汇 | gremlin |
词源 | gremlin; goblin. Many would think gremlin is an ancient word associated with the making of magic mischief, but it is first recorded in 1929 as the name for junior officers in the RAF. The word was probably invented 12 years or so before in World War I, when the little impish gnomelike creature was blamed for everything that went wrong mechanically on an air- craft, a meaning commonly used today. The etymology of the word is unclear. It may be based on goblin, but many other ori- gins have been suggested, including the Irish gruaimin, a bad- tempered little fellow. On the other hand, goblin, meaning about the same, dates back to the early 14th century and appar- ently derives from the French gobelin, the name of a ghost said to have haunted the town of Evreaux in the 1100s. |
