词汇 gribble
词源
gribble. Linnoria lignorum, better known as the gribble (its name possibly a diminutive of grub), is a small crustacean re- sembling a wood louse that bores its own distinctive holes in ships and piers, though it hasn’t done as much damage as the shipworm over the years. The gribble’s work, unlike the ship- worm’s, is visible on the surface of the structure it attacks, be- cause it burrows in the superficial layers of wood. Because its handiwork is visible, gribble damage is usually caught before it goes too far, though this is not always the case. In 1838, for ex- ample, the docks at Plymouth, England, were almost completely destroyed by gribbles.
