词汇 greenroom
词源
greenroom. This lounge in the theater where performers rest when they aren’t on stage, or where people who are to appear on TV wait before they go on, probably takes its name from such a room in London’s Drury Lane Theatre, which just hap- pened to be painted green sometime in the late 17th century. Most authorities reject the old story that the room was painted green to soothe the actors’ eyes. The long-lived English actor Charles Macklin, famous for his portrayal of Shylock in The Merchant of Venice, killed fellow player Adam Hallam, one of a large family of English actors, in the greenroom at the Drury Lane Theatre in 1735. Macklin, an extremely jealous and quar- relsome man, wanted to wear a wig Hallam had chosen for a play both men were appearing in. The Wild Irishman, as he was called, got away with the murder and went his tempestuous way, celebrated as a great lover, boxer, card player, distance walker, and drinker, expending more energy offstage than on.
