Linnaea. Named for its flowers in pairs at the end of slender, upright stalks, the twinflower was scientifically called “Lin- naea” by Linnaeus himself. The great botanist apparently chose this humble genus, consisting of two species, out of modesty, describing the twinflower as “a plant of Lapland, lowly, insig- nificant, disregarded, flowering but a brief space—from Lin- naeus who resembles it.” See linden tree; linnaean system. |
