Little Church around the Corner. Several New York City churches refused to hold funeral services for eminent comedian George Holland (1791–1870) on the grounds that he was an actor. Fellow comedian Joseph Jefferson kept up the search and finally found another church where the pompous minister again refused Holland burial services, but told Jefferson, “there is a little church around the corner where they do this sort of thing.” The funeral was finally held there, at 1 East 29th Street in the Protestant Episcopal Church of the Transfiguration, which soon became known as the Little Church around the Corner and is still the scene of many theatrical funerals and weddings.
