lionize. To lionize a person can mean to show him sights worthy of him, the term taking its name from the old practice of showing visiting dignitaries the lions that used to be kept at the Tower of London menagerie, a major tourist attraction un- til it was abolished at the beginning of the 19th century. An earlier use of the word, however, is to lionize a person by mak- ing a fuss over him, by making him feel like a lion. Both expres- sions date back to the early 1800s. |
