moonlighting. Moonlighting has taken on the meaning of working at a second job after one’s regular job, especially by public servants such as policemen, who are sometimes prohib- ited from doing so. But the word dates back to at least the late 19th century when, in England and Ireland, it meant “the per- formance at night of an illicit action,” especially an expedition to steal or harm another’s property. |
