Ballad of Typhoid Mary. Few are the songs that celebrate a disease as this one does. Swiss author J. F. Federspiel wrote the song “Typhoid Mary,” a true story about a woman who worked as a cook in New York City, spreading death and disease wher- ever she went as a carrier of typhoid fever. Once caught, she was finally confined by health authorities until her death in 1929. |
