Sheraton style. Only Thomas Chippendale has been more widely acclaimed than Thomas Sheraton (1751–1806) as a fur- niture designer. Unlike many of his predecessors, Sheraton was not a cabinetmaker and there is no record that he ever had a shop of his own or worked with his own hands building furni- ture. In fact, only one piece—a glass-fronted bookcase stamped with his initials—is known to have belonged to him. Sheraton’s fame comes principally from his The Cabinet-Maker and Up- holsterer’s Drawing Book (1791), which introduced designs not- ed for simplicity and grace combined with utility. This book, followed by a cabinetmaking dictionary (1802) and an unfin- ished encyclopedia (1804), was intended for London cabinet- makers and the chairs and other pieces drawn in its pages strongly influenced many designers to adopt the Sheraton style, which was based on rectangular shapes, preferring straight lines to curves.
