| 词源 | Shell. An old story tells of a Shell gas station on a busy high- way where a man has been pulled unconscious from a car wreck. When the man finally comes to that night, the first thing he sees are lights flickering about him and a huge sign in red letters reading hell. It takes him a moment to realize that he’s still alive and the sign is just a shell sign with a malfunction- ing letter S. I don’t know a better Shell story, but there is a tale about the British founder of the oil company, Marcus Samuel, naming his London curio shop the Shell Shop after his grand- children brought him pretty seashells from a seaside vacation. In 1897, when Samuel’s son took over and added bottled kero- sene to the shells and other curios sold there, the business ex- panded greatly, but it retained part of its old name, and the Shell Oil Company, complete with its scallop shell logo, was born. |
