shepherd’s sundial. Shepherds used to tell time by the scarlet pimpernel (Anagallis arvensis), which opens a bit after 7:00 a.m., closes at a little past 2:00 p.m., and never opens at all if bad weather is imminent. Its genus name is from a Greek word meaning “delightful,” though it is not a delight to one garden writer, who classifies the low prostrate annual herb with tiny, red bell-shaped flowers as one of the 50 worst garden weeds. Poor man’s weatherglass is another name for it. |
