词汇 | lovelace |
词源 | Lovelace. Another lover to join our eponymous list of Loth- arios, Don Juans, Casanovas, etc., Lovelace, however, usually refers to a selfish foppish lover, one who lives to seduce young women. The word comes from the name of the handsome rake Robert Lovelace, a character in Samuel Richardson’s million- word epistolary novel Clarissa (1748–49). The heartless Love- lace stops at nothing to have Clarissa and eventually rapes her, which leads to her death. |
