The Indian name was accurately ren- dered by the early French voyageurs as mauvaises terres pour traverser—‘bad lands to cross.’ The ground between the buttes is fertile, and the whole region is excellent cattle range, the rock formation affording the best possible winter protection.” Bad- lands National Park is in South Dakota.
