kaput. In the old French gambling game of piquet, capot meant not to win a single trick. Capot became the German ka- putt, with the same meaning, which over a long period of time was extended to mean “having been destroyed, wrecked, or in- capacitated,” just as some players would be after not winning a single trick in a game. By the end of the 19th century kaputt had entered English as kaput. |
