folklore. British antiquary William John Thoms, the founder of Notes and Queries, coined this word in the Athenaeum (Au- gust 1846). In an article therein entitled “Folk Lore” he wrote: “What we in England designate as Popular Antiquities, or Popu- lar Literature . . . would be more aptly described by a good Sax- on compound, Folk-Lore—the Lore of the People . . .” |
