词源 | football. The American game of football has been traced back to a wild and bloody game related to the Roman game of harpastum, which had been known in England since the Ro- man conquest of a.d. 43. It was essentially a free-for-all in which a pack of young men (sometimes numbering in the hun- dreds) would try to kick, push, and butt an air-filled bladder into a rival group’s area often a mile or more away. First the game was called kicking the bladder (a leather ball made by the local shoemaker), then during the Danish invasion, kicking the Dane’s head, though skulls probably weren’t used. The game wasn’t played on a field with boundaries until the 12th century, when the name fut balle was first given to it. The sport was of- ten banned but never successfully, and it eventually evolved into rugby football, which became the American sport of foot- ball. See also football player; rugby. |
