词汇 footnote
词源
footnote. Used mostly in scholarly works to list a source or make a minor or related comment on the main text of a work, footnotes are so called because they are usually placed at the bottom of a page. Often called bottom notes in the early 19th century, when they were apparently used extensively for the first time, they are indicated in the text by superior numbers. Many readers would agree with John Barrymore, who said: “A footnote is like running downstairs to answer the doorbell on the first night of marriage.” When historian Sir John Newle published his excellent biography Queen Elizabeth (1975) with- out footnotes, an Oxford don told historian Eileen Power that this indicated Newle had sold the pass—that is, traded scholar- ship for popularity. “I don’t know about selling the pass,” Power rejoined, “but he has sold 20,000 copies.”
