| 词源 | free soil, free speech, free labor, free men. This was the slo- gan of the American Free-soil Party during the election of 1848. The slogan referred to the party’s opposition to the exten- sion of slavery into any of the territories newly acquired from Mexico. With former President Martin Van Buren as its candi- date, the Free-soilers polled nearly 300,000 votes and were a decisive factor in the victory of the Whigs over the Democrats. In 1854 the Free-soil Party was absorbed into the new Republi- can Party. |
