词源 | phatic speech. A term coined in 1923 by anthropologist Bronisław Malinowski meaning speech employed to express good will or sociability rather than give information. The au- thor and critic Anatole Broyard called phatic speech “a friendly noise.” The word phatic comes from Greek phatos, “spoken.” Malinowski’s exact coinage was phatic communion. |
