词汇 | philadelphia lawyer |
词源 | Philadelphia lawyer. Folklore has it that when Andrew Hamilton successfully defended New York printer John Peter Zenger against libel charges in 1735, establishing the right of freedom of the press in America, observers noted that it took a Philadelphia lawyer to get the printer off. But the term is first recorded more than 50 years later, in 1788, in the form of “It would puzzle a Philadelphia lawyer.” Another theory claims the words come from the New England saying “any three Philadel- phia lawyers are a match for the devil.” Philadelphia at the time was the intellectual and literary center of America, and it was only fitting that a very clever lawyer, versed in the fine points of the law, should be named for the city. |
