词汇 | phaedo |
词源 | Phaedo. It’s said that the philosopher Cleombrotus killed himself after reading Plato’s Phaedo “so that he might enjoy the happiness of the future life so enchantingly described.” The Phaedo is a dialogue narrating the discussion that took place be- tween Socrates and his friends during the last hour of his life. This work also influenced the Roman Stoic philosopher Cato, Caesar’s chief political rival, when he committed suicide by fall- ing on his sword after realizing that his cause against the Cae- sarians was hopeless. Cato had spent all of the last night of his life reading Plato’s Phaedo. Eighteenth-century English poet Eustace Budgell was indirectly influenced by the Phaedo when he committed suicide by drowning himself, for he left behind a note reading: “What Cato did and Addison approved cannot be wrong.” |
