Frankenstein. Frankenstein is the name of the young scien- tist who created a soulless monster out of graveyard corpses in Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley’s novel by that title published in 1818. Frankenstein’s monster is the proper name of the crea- ture, not Frankenstein. Contrary to popular notion, Dr. Frank- enstein’s monster does have a name. The good doctor, played by Boris Karloff, named him Adam in the 1931 film Franken- stein. Because many other movies about the monster give him no name, the name Adam has been all but forgotten. Dr. Frankenstein’s first name, incidentally, was Victor. Franken- stein’s monster has been portrayed in 117 movies around the world, making him the second most portrayed horror movie character in film history—Count Dracula is in first place by a large margin.
