词汇 | forgotten war |
词源 | Forgotten War; police action; conflict; 38th parallel. For- gotten War is a tag for the war, or conflict, in Korea, which be- gan on June 25, 1950, and cost 33,629 American lives before the July 1953 cease-fire. Korea is called the “Forgotten War” be- cause it is often ignored, coming as it does after World War II and before Vietnam. It should be added that neither the United States nor its UN allies ever declared war in Korea (President Truman called the fighting a police action), and 50 years later, the war still hasn’t technically ended, both South Korea and North Korea maintaining troops along the 38th parallel border. According to Time Goes To War (2002): “Even this demarca- tion between the two [sides] had been hastily—almost randomly—selected by two young U.S. officers working with a student atlas late at night in the closing days of World War II.” See mansei! |
