Skutnik. Lenny Skutnik, the young hero of a 1982 Washing- ton plane crash, was introduced by President Reagan during his State of the Union address. When such introductions be- came common in political speeches, the word Skutnik began to be used not as an eponymous synonym for heroism, as might be expected, but for “a human prop, used by a speaker to make a political point,” as Jeff Greenfield defined it in his book Oh, Waiter! One Order of Crow! (2001). The word has no relation to sputnik. |
