Russian roulette. Sad to say, Russian roulette refers to a game played throughout the world, as harrowing scenes in the movie The Deer Hunter (1978) reveal. It is, to say the least, a game of high risk in which each player spins the cylinder of a revolver containing one bullet, points the muzzle at the temple, and pulls the trigger. The word roulette is from the gambling game of rou- lette, French for “little wheel.” Russian may be used because czar- ist Russian officers played the game, but there is no solid evidence of this, and the term hasn’t been traced back before 1935.
