rutherfordium. The first person to split the atom was New Zealand–born Ernest Rutherford (1871–1937). Baron Ruther- ford had won the Nobel Prize in chemistry in 1908. After an- other three years he proposed his new atomic theory, which led to his splitting of the atom in 1919 and the naming after him of the unit of radioactive disintegration called “rutherfordium.” Strangely enough, Rutherford didn’t believe that atomic power could ever be harnessed. |
