sawbuck. Our word sawbuck for a sawhorse (“in which two supports at each end cross each other and so form a rack for holding that which is sawed”) derives from either the Dutch zaagbok or the German Sägebock, both meaning the same. Saw- buck is also slang for a 10-dollar bill. First attested in 1850, it is so named because the Roman numeral X for 10 resembles the x-shapes on each end of the sawbuck. |
