shtick. Deriving ultimately from the German Stuck, “piece,” shtick (or shtik) has a number of meanings in Yiddish, but its most recent meaning is best-known in English today. Since about 1955, it has been heard most as the term for a comic act- ing routine or piece of business inserted to get a laugh, to draw attention to oneself. Thus it also means one’s special interest or talent, one’s “thing,” as in “That’s his shtick.” |
