词汇 | apache |
词源 | apache. An apache is a Parisian criminal or ruffian and an apache dance is a violent dance originated by the Parisian apaches. The word, in this sense, was coined by French newspa- per reporter Emile Darsy, who is said to have read of “blood- thirsty Apache Indians” in the works of American authors and thought that their name would aptly fit denizens of the under- world. The Apache Indians, perhaps not deserving this reputa- tion, derive their name from a Zuni word meaning enemy, and the name was applied to many nomadic bands of Indians roam- ing the southwestern United States. The Apaches called them- selves dene, an Athabascan word for “human being.” |
