quahaug. Venus mercenaria, the edible hardshell clam. Indi- ans introduced this name and the clams themselves to the first European settlers in New England. Quahaugs are usually divid- ed into chowders, as large as four inches at the widest point; cherrystones, half-grown quahaugs; and littlenecks, the most tender and smallest of quahaugs, at two inches or so. |
