python. Python derives from the Greek verb meaning “to rot,” not a likely source for the name of the largest living snake next to the anaconda. The first python was a huge ser- pent slain near Delphi by Apollo, and the monster rotted in the sun after it died. The name of the mythological serpent wasn’t given to real snakes until 1836, though it had been ap- plied in English to other mythical monsters two centuries be- fore this. |
