Quaalude. This sedative drug, a former trademark, takes its name from a contraction of the words quiet interlude. The aa in the word, however, was taken from the well-known antacid drug Maalox, which the William H. Rorer, Inc., the manufac- turer of both drugs, thought would lend prestige to the new product. Quaaludes, developed in the 1960s, are also called ludes and downs. |
