quail fight. Few if any Americans had heard of the term quail fight before the war in Afghanistan. Men there gather at village markets to bet on such fights, which feature fighting quail that cost their owners up to $300 for a fierce competitor, a huge sum in an impoverished land. The contests are similar to cock fights, but the little quail are only the size of a large baby chick. A pho- to of them can be found in the New York Times, 12/4/01. |
