Fatso; Ratso. Fatso as the nickname for a fat person is an Americanism dating back to the Great Depression years, which were hardly fat years. The word is first recorded in a Damon Runyon tale and later gained in popularity when it became the name of a button-popping character in the comic strip Smilin’ Jack. It may have suggested Ratso for an unkempt unsavory person, most notably the character Ratso Rizzo in the film Midnight Cowboy. |
