ton of cobblestone. A large quantity of anything ordinary or commonplace. American radio comedian Fred Allen (1894– 1956) coined the expression. He bound all the scripts for his long-running radio show—39 a year—and stacked them on 10 feet of shelves beside a one-volume copy of Shakespeare’s col- lected works, which occupied a mere 31⁄2 inches of space. “I did that as a corrective,” he explained, “just in case I start think- ing a ton of cobblestone is worth as much as a few diamonds.” |
