词源	Tonton Macoutes. The Tonton Macoutes were the secret po- lice thugs who terrorized “enemies of the state” under the dic- tatorial Duvalier regimes in Haiti from 1957–86. After the Du- valiers were deposed, the name was applied to any thug who terrorized poor people in that country. The Tonton Macoutes were named for Tonton Macoute (Uncle Knapsack), a giant bo- geyman who roamed the Haitian countryside stuffing children in his sack. The mythical character became all too real.
