词汇 | tongue twister |
词源 | tongue twister. The name tongue twister for a sequence of words difficult to pronounce is first recorded in 1898, long after some of the classic tongue twisters were invented. Probably the oldest or best-known is “Sally” (or “she”) “sells seashells at the seashore.” But experts hold that “the sixth sick shiek’s sixth sheep’s sick” is the worst tongue twister in English, especially if spoken rapidly. The 72 muscles we use in speaking one word seem to rebel against pronouncing all of these together. Almost as famous as Sally and her seashells is “Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers” etc. Try also: “The skunk sat on a stump; the skunk thunk the stump stunk, but the stump thunk the skunk stunk.” Or say “Toy boat” fast five times. More great old tongue twisters like “How much wood would a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood?” can be found in Peter Piper’s Practical Principles of Plain and Perfect Pronunciation (1834). In the meantime, try those 72 muscles on Carolyn Wells’s: A tutor who tutored the flute Tried to tutor two tutors to toot Said the two to the tutor, “Is it harder to toot, or To tutor two tutors to toot?” and on the vowelless Czech words for “stick a finger in the throat”: Strch prst skrz krk. |
