词汇 far from the madding crowd
词源
far from the madding crowd. A common expression meaning to be in a peaceful place. The phrase is often said to come from the title of British novelist and poet Thomas Har- dy’s novel Far from the Madding Crowd (1874). However, Hardy took the title from a line of Thomas Gray’s poem “Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard” (1750), the full line being, “Far from the madding crowd’s ignoble strife.” Gray’s poem contains several of the best-known phrases in English litera- ture, including “full many a flower is born to blush unseen,” “some mute inglorious Milton,” “the pomp of power,” “the brook that babbles by,” “the peep of dawn,” and “along the cool sequester’d vale of life.” Madding in the poem means act- ing madly, insanely, not acting maddeningly. See paths of glory; peep of dawn.
