Lily Marleen. One of the few songs or poems whose real-life origins are known. This song, called “the most beautiful love song of all time” by John Steinbeck, was written in the early years of World War I by German officer cadet and poet Hans Leip. He took the woman’s name in the title from a girl he loved back home named Lili, a grocer’s daughter, and a green-eyed beauty named Marleen whom he’d met in a Berlin art gallery. The poem was not published for another 20 years and only be- came popular in 1939 when Berlin composer Norbert Schultze set it to music and singer Lale Andersen recorded it.
