词汇 | yes we have no bananas |
词源 | yes, we have no bananas. Originally, this was the title of a song written by Americans Frank Silver and Irving Cohen in 1923. One story has the team borrowing the first line from wordsmith Tad Dorgan and creating the song with the refrain “Yes, we have no bananas, / We have no bananas today.” Anoth- er more dramatic account has Silver getting the idea for the song when he heard a Greek fruit peddler yell up to a woman at a New York City tenement window, “Yes, we have no bananas!” Whatever the case, the song became immensely popular, and, according to H. L. Mencken, yes, we have no bananas became the most widely used catchphrase of the 1920s, even spreading across the sea to England. In his book The Illiterate Digest (1924) Will Rogers wrote, “I would rather have been the Au- thor of that Banana Masterpiece than the author of the Consti- tution of the United States.” |
