blue peter. On ships ready to leave port, a signal flag called the blue peter is raised to call all crew members aboard and to notify everyone in port that all money claims must be settled because the ship is departing. The flag is blue with a white square in the center. Why the peter in the term? It may be a cor- ruption of the French partir, “to depart,” while most consider it to be a telescoping of the word repeater. The flag may have orig- inally been used as a “repeater flag,” a signal hoisted to indicate that a message from another ship hadn’t been read and should be repeated. |
