The OED advises that yesteryear, “last year,” or “time past,” was coined in 1870 by British painter and poet Dante Gabriel Rossetti (1828–82) as an English equivalent for the French word antan (from Latin ante annum) in a poem of François Villon’s. This resulted in the famous trans- lated line in Villon’s poem “But where are the snows of yes- teryear?” However, yesterday, yestereven, yestermorning, and yesternight were all recorded long before Rossetti’s yesteryear. It is said that Rossetti practiced his poetic craft by playing the once popular versifying game bouts-rimes (rhymes without lines) in which lines are composed for certain given rhymes. He could write a sonnet from such lines in five to eight minutes.
