词汇 | whole ball of wax |
词源 | whole ball of wax. Everything sticks to wax and leaves an impression on touching it. Therefore, whole ball of wax (some- times ball of wax) has come to mean “everything, the whole lot, the whole kit and caboodle.” That is possibly the origin of this common Americanism, first recorded in 1953 and still com- mon on Madison Avenue, although several more complicated explanations have been suggested by word and phrase Hawk- shaws. One such guess involves wax balls used in a complicated drawing for the distribution of estates; another claims whole ball of wax is a corruption of whole bailiwick. No one is sure. |
