white man’s burden. Rudyard Kipling (1865–1936), the first English writer to receive the Nobel Prize, was often accused of jingoism and prejudice. Kipling contributed many expressions to the language in his novels, poems, and stories, including the well-known white man’s burden, which depicts black, brown, and yellow people in Great Britain’s colonies at the time as backward children the white man must take care of. The derog- atory term is rarely heard anymore. |
