epithalamium. Deriving from Greek for “at the bridal cham- ber,” epithalamium refers to a love song or poem in honor of a bride and bridegroom sung outside the bride’s room on her wedding night. The word is first recorded about 1580. “The Song of Solomon” or “Song of Songs” is said to be an epitha- lamium, and memorable epithalamia were also written by Spenser, Donne, Ben Jonson, Herrick, Marvell, and Dryden, among other poets. |
